With vaults there are usually no strings attached, but in this case there definitely are in this tool for those of us who like our strings unrefined, fully adulterated through a knackered cassette tape with just a pinch of wobble.

Theo takes us through the remarkably feature-rich resource that is this latest gem from our vault.

We’ve released a few string libraries in the past, including a previous vault called R+D Strings which has a lush, enveloping quality to it. “Lofi Strings” has a more nostalgic sonic palette, owing to the fact we’ve processed these clean string recordings through a vintage cassette deck.

First introduced in the 60s, the compact cassette revolutionised music accessibility, but it came with its quirks. The magnetic tape adds soft compression and saturation, flutter and “wow” that causes pitch drift, the occasional “drop-out” (meaning the sound sometimes mutes from the tape not reaching the tape head), and a subtle, omnipresent hiss. This all defined the sonic identity of a generation, and overtime these idiosyncrasies shaped a sound that we now associate with nostalgia, warmth, and analog realism. With “LoFi Strings” we’ve honoured these imperfections and have brought them into the orchestral world.
